What I gave…Gift Inspiration for the Whole Family

The holidays are fun (but also tough) because my family has a lot of birthdays from the last week of November leading right through Christmas Day.  To know how much and what to gift can be challenging, but this year I'm pretty proud with what I came up with, so I figured I would share!

Olive Oil & Vinegar Sampler Pack - F. Oliver's

Picture
I bought this lovely sampler set for my mother, who loves cooking.  F. Oliver's has a location in Downtown Ithaca, NY, where I go to school.  I was browsing shops with some friends right before break and discovered their beautiful tasting room and, being that I'm quite picky, hesitated to try thier many vinegars and oils.  I consistently like peach flavored items so I decided that I would try their Blushing Peach Balsamic Vinegar and am so happy I did.  It was DELICIOUS.  My mom loves figs so their Ripe Fig Balsamic Vinegar and Heady Garlic Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Fresh Bright Basil Extra Virgin Olive Oil finished off this sampler pack perfectly!

Cardinal Glass - Charley Harper

I started a job at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology this past semester and my mom was excited because we love the Lab and all their art, which is designed by Charley Harper.  I checked out the gift store in the Lab on my last day of work this semester and picked up this glass for my mom, featuring cardinals designed by Charley Harper.  Although I wish they had a mug instead because my family uses pretty much only matching IKEA glasses, this I'm sure will be a useful and happy way to bring Charley Harper's work into our home.

Chukka Boots - Joseph Abboud

My brother's birthday is December 25th so I always like to get him a bit of a bigger gift.  As the household fashionista, my brother usually runs outfits by me and has me go shopping with him for new clothes.  I think he likes when I get him shoes and clothes because he knows I already approve of them.  I think these will up my brother's style game and give him some more shoewear options!

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kirk Walker Graves

Picture
I found this book while browsing at Warby Parker and was compelled to pick it up.  I'm not a big Kanye Fan but my brother is, so I bought it.  From my understanding, the book goes through the different tracks and breaks them down as a look at Kanye's public persona and what went into the lyrics from a pop culture stand point.  It's a short read and I think will make my brother smile.  If someone does read this book and has a better understanding of it, please do let me know.

Sweatpants - Cornell Store

My dad is the hardest to shop for.  He wears a uniform to work so clothes aren't typically a great option and he doesn't have any stand out hobbies.  I've outgrown handmade gifts for him and tired out buying model firetrucks and fire department themed items.  Luckily, he requested a pair of Cornell sweatpants for the holidays this year.  These were the ones I chose for him.  I'm not the hugest fan of the design, but I knew my dad would like the vintage look.  Remember when you're buying gifts, keep the person receiving it in mind and put their likes above your own.

Cobble Street Cousins - Cynthia Rylant

These books were some of my favorites when I was younger.  I remember using the step stool to reach the top shelf where they were hidden at my elementary school's library. I love watching my little cousin Leila grow up and consider her a little sister, so it's fun to pass books and dance costumes and all sorts of things down to her.  I also love giving gifts that are "unplugged" and not on iPads or laptops or require a video game console.  I really hope she loves these books as much as I did, because I bought her all six!

Necklace - Mela Atisans

Picture
I cannot find the exact necklace online that I bought for my aunt for her birthday, but I found it at the Project JUST Gift & Change Market hosted at the NYC Patagonia SoHo Store.  It's elegant and simplistic, just like my aunt's French style.  She likes jewelery and this piece's dark stones will match just about everything!  Mela Artisans also reinvests a percentage of revenues back to the communities of their artisans, which I really value.

A few other items I've thought about giving this year are giftcards to local restaurants and those books that you give family members to fill in about their history and their families.  I haven't decided on which exactly yet, so sorry I don't have more details to share on that front!  Other than those, the above is what I gave.  Did you have a great gift that you received or gave this year?  Let me know in the comments below!
