Last night was the 3rd annual ECOuture Fashion Show! I had four incredible models and modeled an upcycled top myself.
Happy April!April is a challenging month, bringing with it the stress of the end of the semester. When I've been having a tough day, I often find myself listening to one of my favorite musicians from growing up: Avril Lavigne.
Avril Lavigne is known for her early 2000 hits, including "Complicated" and "Sk8r Boi" and was an icon to tons of young girls in her prime. I remember my first time I heard "Complicated" was at a 2004 New Year's Eve Party in a version of Karaoke Revolution. I was hooked. My mom's family used to own a dessert distribution company and we all had our special birthday desserts. My brother's favorite was a Raspberry Almond Tart by Bittersweet Pastries. This last birthday, we really wanted to get him his favorite tart but could not find it stocked locally. Always up for a DIY, I got to work. We made it gluten free, but the crust is the only part where improvement can definitely be made.
Hannah Kaminsky, a columnist at VegNews Magazine published this recipe in 2010. The New York Times republished it this past holiday season. My mom loves to make these and made a few adjustments of her own to them, as reflected in the recipe below. Yield is 24 truffles.
I've seen a few posts on my Facebook questioning why women (and men!) took to the streets to march yesterday for the Women's March on Washington. A few posts pointed out the severe women's rights issues occurring around the world and that they (such as FGM, child marriage, sex trafficking, etc.) are more pressing than those happening in the US and therefore women in the US should be happy and have no need to protest. Below I defend why I marched and why I assume many other marchers did as well, so here we go:
