My mom's family used to own a dessert distribution company and we all had our special birthday desserts. My brother's favorite was a Raspberry Almond Tart by Bittersweet Pastries. This last birthday, we really wanted to get him his favorite tart but could not find it stocked locally. Always up for a DIY, I got to work. We made it gluten free, but the crust is the only part where improvement can definitely be made.
Hannah Kaminsky, a columnist at VegNews Magazine published this recipe in 2010. The New York Times republished it this past holiday season. My mom loves to make these and made a few adjustments of her own to them, as reflected in the recipe below. Yield is 24 truffles.
I made this guac for our annual Christmas Day drop-in and it got rave reviews. I originally went to make the recipe from the New York Times that had everyone up in arms about adding green peas to guacamole, but after actually reading it, I realized certain family members would not enjoy the cilantro or the jalapeño pepper. So I made it my own. It was eaten so fast I didn't even have a chance to take a photo the first time around! This recipe makes about one soup bowl worth.
In June I visited Washington, DC. My friend Kyle took me to grab a bite at this place called Roti. It's pretty much a Mediterranean Chipotle. Anyway, they had a crazy good selection of drinks:
One of my friends, Viv, has an amazing organization called Too Damn Young. It's a site to help young people deal with loss, and it's an incredible space full of healing and heart. Every year, she celebrates the anniversary of when she started it and invites a bunch of awesome people to spend the day with her in Riverside Park in NYC at a potluck picnic.
